As 2011 winds down, Unwired Nation, the Mobile-Apps-As-A-Service company, recaps its biggest year yet, with momentum across all business fronts:  customers, partners, solutions, leadership, staff and funding.  Highlighted by a $6.5 million round of funding, Unwired Nation’s milestones also include a move into new, expanded office space, four key additions to its executive team, and establishing strong relationships with customers in many different industries, standouts being pharmacy industry leaders VoiceTech and VoicePort, and financial services [...]

MyEdu, the nation’s leading student academic platform for completing college, announced today that it has partnered with the University of Texas System (UT System) to provide an enhanced student academic platform, helping students across UT System institutions to significantly increase their return on education by raising graduation rates, decreasing time to graduation and supporting career readiness goals. As part of the partnership, the UT System is making a $10 million investment in MyEdu, which is [...]

Macheen Inc., a global cloud service provider for connected devices, today announced it has closed $10 million in Series B financing to build on its successful market entry earlier this year. The round was led by North Bridge Venture Capital, whose Partner, Basil Horangic, will join the company’s Board of Directors. Macheen’s existing investors also participated in this new round of financing.  Existing investors include DFJ Mercury, which led last year’s Series A financing and [...]

I’m pretty clear about my love for Spiceworks, their business model, the management team, and the investors. Today they announced the results of their fundraising, and even TechCrunch wrote up their obligatory 4-paragraph blost post.

GameSalad announced a new round of funding yesterday, and the news got picked up by our very own Austin American Statesman, as well as TechCrunch. We wrote about their A round funding last year. Back in 2009 your humble editor picked them to debut in the Innotech Beta Summit, next to other great companies such as InfoChimps, Spredfast, and PetsMD.

As soon as I heard the Coro Health story several months ago from Brian Anderson, co-founder and President, I knew this company was on the path to success. Today the company is announcing that they’ve raised a $2M round of financing for the company. Researchers have long known that music and spirituality have therapeutic effects on an individual’s health, but for most healthcare providers, traditional one-on-one therapies have been too costly and difficult to implement. [...]

We last reported on Riptano’s launch in April – and just a few months later the company has announced they already raised a tidy $2.7MM in a Series A.

Lightspeed Venture Partners led the round, while Sequoia Capital and Jason Calacanis also got in on the action.  John Vrionis of Lightspeed Venture Partners will join Riptano’s board.  The company said they will use the cash to hire developers and further build out their business team to better serve their customers.

It’s been almost two years since we first saw Smooth-Stone pitch their business at the Rice Alliance venture forum. The company has been making steady progress, culminating in a huge round of financing. The company announced it is raising $48 million from a unique syndicate of investors comprising industry leading venture capital firms and semiconductor innovators. That syndicate includes a pretty substantial group including the government of Abu Dhabi (via ATIC), traditional venture capital (Battery, [...]

We first wrote about Caringo two years ago with their first very quiet and secret raise of funds. Today they are putting out a press release announcing their $5M in funding. It’s hard to say if this is in addition to their previous money, or if they’re finally announcing that they’ve raised $5M over the past few years and they’re lumping it all together to call it a Series A.

I think it’s safe to say that early stage funding is going strong in Austin in 2010. It seems that not a week goes by without a notable seed round or A round invested in Austin companies. Back in April we wrote about Workstreamer, a business listening platform, launching their public beta. At the time they had 350 people in their private beta, and hoped to gain momentum and real customer insights from a larger public beta.
