Yelp is an extortion scam and that is really all you need to know about it.

As for foursquare and gowalla, I would never use either due to the creep factor but they seem like equally fine services if you do not mind that.

I'm with Josh on all points here. I also think that Gowalla is more likely to win because it feels a lot less "lonely" when you don't have a large number of friends using the service.

Remember, the LBS landscape is already littered with corpses just a year or two into the development of the market. Foursquare and Gowalla have a new catch to get people to use, but it really remains to be seen whether or not the concept of turning LBS into a game of sorts is the way that the technology goes mainstream.

There are also new comers, such as tellmewhere (http://tellmewhere.com/iphone-app) that combines yelp & foursquare features. Already +400k users in France and coming. Main advantages over Foursquare / Gowalla: a worldwide comprehensive database & a messenging system included

I think Gowalla and Foursquare have done a lot more in the real-time space than Yelp; Yelp doesn't really provide any sort of real-time features in its mobile app, and that is a big part of the reason the Gowalla and Foursquare are popular. I can log into Gowalla and check where my friends are at that moment, which is fun and actually pretty useful.

But I do think that Yelp is formidable in that it has a big head start in the local business and location-based spheres and they have a huge team supporting that effort, particularly when it comes to offering specials/discounts to users.

And I'm with Josh - I like Gowalla better. It's a slicker interface, and collecting and trading objects is fun. I still use both most places, too, but am slowly phasing Foursquare out. Like you said, it's hard to keep up with both.

I use both but I like Gowalla better. The interface is nicer, I like the virtual goods, and I like how it really checks where you are using GPS to avoid fake checkins. Gowalla is better designed for crowdsourcing and viral growth - Foursquare only works in cities that they have enabled.
