Austin Companies Participate at Rice Alliance Venture Forum

Yesterday was the 6th annual Rice Alliance IT and Web 2.0 venture forum, at Rice University in Houston. The event showcases tech companies from all around Central Texas. The judges select five companies (from a huge crowd of applicants) for the morning sessions where they get 10 minutes on stage to pitch their company to a panel of venture capitalists. After the pitch, a few of the VC’s are selected to give feedback to the presenters.  Austin-based Moximity was selected as one of the five presenters.

The afternoon contained elevator pitches from 55 different companies. Each company was given just 90-seconds (complete with a timer) to pitch their company to a larger panel of judges in the crowd. The judges selected ten “most promising” companies which received trophies at the end of the day.

Austin-based companies receiving trophies included:

  • Socialware – a startup company that provides tools for large companies to enable and manage the use of social media tools.
  • Hourville – a marketplace for people who sell their time by the hour.
  • LessNetworks – a provider of free wireless internet and wireless hotspots.
  • SmoothStone – Still in stealth mode, they have chip technology that reduces power consumption in the data center.

Congratulations to you all!

Rice Alliance 6th Annual I.T. & Web 2.0 Venture Forum

If you’re going to the Rice Alliance forum tomorrow, make sure to be there at 3:30 for the Texas Web 2.0 Bloggers panel. I will be on the panel along with the top tech bloggers from Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Perhaps you already read the Texas Startup Blog (Alex), or the Startup Houston blog (Josh). We’ll be discussing the state of our respective cities in terms of startups, the investing environment, and who knows what else.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Hiring or Firing?

Greg Garrison is the president of vrecruting – Recruiting solutions from vcfo.  He has over 15 years experience in the recruiting and staffing industry, and is regularly quoted nationally as a thought-leader in employment trends.  He can be reached at ggarrison (at) vcfo or 512-450-6569.

Is your startup company hiring or firing? Chances are you’re doing a little of both. Neither is easy and both events impact you, the individual, your team, your company and even your customers and stakeholders.

Layoffs

We are all trying to navigate through these difficult times. Chances are you’re contemplating cutting employees, rather than hiring new ones. During economic downturns there is a great propensity to let people go in an effort to contain costs — the greater the economic downturn impacts your company, the greater the tendency to cut workers.

According to a recent national study by the Institute for Corporate Productivity:

  • 58% of the companies polled have had a reduction in force within the last year
  • 39% foresee one coming within the next six months
  • Of those companies that reported a reduction in the last year, half (48%) expect another cut in the next six months

Layoffs may be prudent and necessary for your company to survive and continue to stay afloat. Cutting headcount will certainly reduce your company’s expenditures, but it may also have severe consequences to the overall business, capabilities and goals.

In the last recession, during and after the dot com bust, we saw many Austin startup companies cut workers hastily. They then found it quite challenging, expensive and times consuming to reconstruct their workforces to position the company to best compete again once the market started to recover and had settled.

Before making headcount decisions it’s a good rule of thumb to “measure twice and cut once.” Carefully consider the following:

  • Who will pick up the work load of the employees being let go?
  • How might the void impact your company?
  • How much have you invested in these employees?
  • How much will you spend in severance?
  • How difficult will it be to find their skills again?
  • When might they be needed once again?
  • What would the recruiting costs be?
  • What would the training costs be?

Hiring

Even as companies go through a reduction in force, it’s common for them to continue to recruit and hire. Key skills are always needed – even in economic downturns. In October there were 3.3 million job openings nationwide and during the month 4.3 million people were hired.

In the coming months economic conditions may continue to deteriorate and unemployment rates will most likely increase. It’s important to understand that the unemployment rate itself is not necessarily an adequate barometer for Austin’s own talent pool. Competition for top talent here in Austin won’t let up much simply because the unemployment rate is high. Top engineering, sales/marketing and accounting/finance talent will continue to be in demand and somewhat scarce in Austin.

During these current economic times it’s important to leave your recruiting engine running. There are two challenges you’ll face when trying to recruit during a downturn.

  1. Candidates with coveted skills hunker down and remain hidden and scarce. It takes a greater recruiting effort to find candidates who are gainfully employed and get them to consider and accept your positions.
  2. Sifting through “noise” – The amount of unqualified candidates and displaced workers who apply to your open positions spikes exponentially. I posted a Software Engineer job recently and we received over 200 resumes. Only 8 of the respondents had degrees and most were from unrelated industries. It takes a significant amount of time and energy to appropriately sort through and respond to applicants.

Whether your company is hiring, firing or both, it’s important to remember your startup’s capabilities, sustainability and livelihood are all directly tied to your ability to recruit, develop, deploy and motivate top workers. People are you startup’s most coveted asset! Hiring and/or firing takes careful consideration.

Bazaarvoice Announces Quicktake

Bazaarvoice, the market and technology leader in hosted social commerce applications that drive sales, today introduced Bazaarvoice QuickTake, a new social navigation tool that allows customers to more easily mine the opinions of other consumers in order to make the best purchase decisions. With QuickTake, shoppers can now access a quick-view summary of user-generated content related to that product – directly on the product detail page. This QuickTake summary includes average overall rating, as well as product dimensions and product pros and cons as tagged by other reviewers. Customers can simply click through on a pro or con tag to easily identify the most personally impactful reviews and gain a better, more relevant online shopping experience.

“Online businesses are increasingly merchandising with reviews, including the use of top-rated navigation to drive product exposure and sales,” said Brett Hurt, founder and CEO of Bazaarvoice. “QuickTake fuels social navigation with first-of-its kind user-generated content sorting via tags, maximizing the impact of reviewer profiles and review dimension data via navigation that is entirely created and controlled by the consumer. This is the type of consumer control and sorting that David Weinberger was talking about in his recent book Everything Is Miscellaneous and our clients are embracing the power of this to drive more sales.”

QuickTake is fully customizable for Bazaarvoice clients and can be easily integrated with existing reviews and review tags. A unique benefit is its ability to utilize product page links that will sort and display reviews based on a distinct tag. This can be a powerful tool to support product merchandising and advertising. For example, an advertisement merchandising an electronics product as “durable” could include a link to the related product page that sorts all reviews containing a high rating for “durability” to the top. The QuickTake capabilities and benefits compliment other Bazaarvoice social navigation technologies including ShoutIt!, which enables users to share a review, profile, or product on Facebook, Digg, or del.icio.us, and site search integration allowing users to navigate to user-generated content driven product categories, such as “Top Rated.”

“Working with Bazaarvoice has taught us that user-generated content and social navigation are a sure path to sales – when done right,” said Bliss Dake, Vice President of eCommerce & Operations at Mighty Leaf Tea, who switched to Bazaarvoice from a “free” ratings and reviews solution. “Bazaarvoice combines cutting-edge functionality with a team that really understands retail and marketing, and is willing to work hard to make sure that we get the most out of reviews on our site, in our marketing and in our search campaigns.”

BabysList Launches

If you’ve got kids, you know that they outgrow clothes in a matter of months. Sometimes they get worn once. Sometimes clothes get buried in the closet and before you get the tags off, they’ve outgrown it anyway. Well now there is a great resource for parents, a marketplace for baby stuff. It’s a great idea really, and will get even better when a few thousand people are on there.

But don’t make the mistake I made. I accidentally typed www.babylist.com and it redirected me to a site in the UK. This website is BabysList.com. It was produced by a little known organization named Austin Startup Labs.

Boundless Network Acquires Custom Solutions

Boundless Network, a technology-enabled branded merchandise distributor, announced today that it has acquired Texas-based distributor Custom Solutions. According to Boundless Network CEO Jason Black, the acquisition is a win for both firms. “Custom Solutions has strong relationships with some of the country’s top brands. Now, as part of Boundless Network, Custom Solutions will be able to leverage our technology platform to expand market share and offer quantifiable value to clients who are looking to save money in this recessive economy,” said Black.

Black believes Boundless’ unique value to customers is the reason top professionals have chosen to move to Boundless Network. “Our ability to help companies better manage their promotional spending positions our sales professionals to retain and grow their customer relationships despite a difficult economic landscape,” said Black.

Boundless Network’s technology platform and innovative approach to professionalizing the promotional products industry were key influences in Custom Solutions CEO Chris Miner’s decision to move to Boundless Network. Miner believes it was the right move for the growth of his customers and employees.

In 2009, Boundless Network plans to continue recruiting top professionals and acquiring top promotional products distributors with revenues between $2 million and $10 million located in key regions throughout the country. In three years, Boundless Network has grown from two to more than 150 employees; 70 are located in Austin. During the past 12 months, the company has completed six acquisitions as part of a successful nationwide expansion from a single location to 18 regional offices located coast-to-coast across the US.

The Austin Business Journal recently ranked Boundless Network as the No. 2 fastest growing company in Central Texas, in the more than $10 million in revenue category. The company was also recognized as the No. 6 best place to work in the promotional products industry by the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) out of more than 16,000 companies in the industry.

UnBoundID Lands $2M from Silverton

UnBoundID

UnBoundID

If the definition of “news” is based on the root of the word (“new”) then this one definitely fits the bill. UnBoundID must have filed some documents with the Texas State Securities Board and/or the SEC stating that they’ve raised $2M of a planned $3M round of financing from Silverton Partners. So what’s new about that? Let me count the ways. First of all, who are these guys? If their goal is to be stealthy, then they’re doing a great job. The company is reportedly creating some products in the identity space, which is certainly hot. Hot or not, the environment for Series A fundraising is challenging at best. Not to mention that Silverton has a reputation for being very selective about their investments.

Add all this up, and it will be exciting to see what this company is doing.
