2009 Silicon Hills Map

Silicon Hills PosterIt’s hard to believe the end of the year is here, which means that preparations are being made for the 2009 Silicon Hills poster. You’ve seen them all around town, and you’ve probably been given a few posters as gifts over the years. For 2009, a 5-foot version of the poster will be featured at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. Approximately 35,000 of these posters get distributed each year. Your building and logo will be highlighted on the map, just like many other companies you’ve seen on there in the past. The deadline is October 15th, so if you’re interested contact Alisha Ring now.

Small World Labs Expands Into Europe

Small World Labs, an Austin-based provider of enterprise social media solutions and online community building expertise, today announced an agreement with the ProTech group of companies that will make Small World Labs software available throughout the United Kingdom. ProTech, a 12-year-old provider of customer relationship management (CRM) software used by the Professional Footballer’s Association, the Liberal Democrat political party, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Institute of Physics, the Royal British Legion and other high-profile organizations, will immediately begin making Small World Labs solutions available to its installed base, and plans to expand its business by offering Small World Labs to the growing market for online community software across the region in general.

ProTech will provide the full line of Small World Labs’ customizable online community platforms, supporting organizations in their efforts to build awareness, acquire new constituents and strengthen relationships with existing audiences. The company expects many of its customers will initially adopt features such as photo and video sharing, specialized groups and forums, and blogs; incrementally adding functionality as the community grows.

“We are seeing great demand throughout the region for online community solutions and with Small World Labs we believe we’re among the very first in England to come to market with a comprehensive offering,” said Mark Trouth, founder and managing director of ProTech. “We see Small World Labs as an important factor in the continued growth of our business and believe the applications will prove invaluable to our clients.”

“The agreement with ProTech is an important milestone in the evolution of Small World Labs and one we believe will accelerate our already healthy growth,” said Michael Wilson, CEO of Small World Labs. “ProTech is exactly the caliber of company we look for when considering business relationships. Many organizations throughout the UK already put their trust in ProTech and can now look to them for proven social media software and community building counsel.”

Moximity Beta Explores Location Aware Services

Moximity iPhone LogoAustin-based Moximity released a limited beta of their new mobile application on Thursday. The launch was celebrated at an amazing party at The Belmont after the TechCrunch Meet-Up. Moximity allows you to see restaurants, clubs, and other locations that are in close proximity to your location, and to broadcast your location to your friends via Twitter and Facebook. Moximity is also partnering with major music and film festivals to provide event details and to allow you tell your friends what stage or film you’re enjoying.

One of the great things about Moximity is that it’s not another social network. You don’t have to bother all your friends by inviting them to join Moximity, it will work in conjunction with your existing social networks like Facebook. The 4-minute video demo of Moximity will give you a quick overview of shows how the product overlays your social network on top of the place you go and the things you do.

Moximity has been getting some great press for the beta launch. There is a great story in The Statesman today. The writeup in VentureBeat talks about Moximity’s competitive positioning with Whrrl and Loopt, and the Washington Post notes that Moximity is the only social location-based service to monetize its offering.

If you’re interested in experiencing Moximity for yourself, we’ve got 50 beta codes that can be found here, so get them while they’re hot. Right now it is only available for the iPhone, but the Blackberry client is coming soon.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am an investor and advisor to Moximity.

AntStorm Beta Doing Well

AntStorm LogoEarlier in the month we wrote about the public beta of AntStorm, and it seems to be going well. The company announced today that more than 2,500 trails have been created by registered users. AntStorm users share collections of their favorite links about a particular topic as “trails” on AntStorm and the major search engines. Groups of AntStorm users can also collaboratively find, recommend, annotate, and vote on the best links for a specific topic, exposing members of the group to great new information and resources on their favorite topics.

“We’re very happy and a bit surprised by such a fast start,” said David Wilson, president and co-founder of AntStorm. “Many social media sites take several months to see this kind of momentum in terms of content generation, so we see this as a strong validation of what we are doing and how we are doing it.”

Wilson continued: “While we have a great deal of work ahead, we are excited about this milestone in our progress. We look forward to helping our users find information better and faster, while connecting with others who share their interests to interact and collaborate in innovative and rewarding ways.”

Yam Jam – Back For Seconds

Members of the Austin technology community banded together to create Operation Turkey several years ago. The organization is a grass roots effort to feed thousands of homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Last year, they started a music event, the Austin Yam Jam, to raise awareness and funds. This year, the Yam Jam is “back for seconds” with another great event at Threadgills featuring Mingo Fishtrap, Carolyn Wonderland, Guy Forsyth, and porterdavis.

It’s coming up Sunday, October 5th and you can buy tickets here. Thanks to the generous folks at Threadgills, and the musicians themselves, 100% of the ticket proceeds go to Operation Turkey. See you there!

Challenge Games not challenged in raising funds

Challenge Games, Andrew Busey’s latest startup and the company behind the popular online fantasy game Duels and the new fantasy baseball and card collecting game Baseball Boss, announced it has secured $10 million in Series B funding. The round is being led by Globespan Capital Partners with participation from Series A investor Sequoia Capital as well as existing investors.  This closely follows the $4.5 million the company raised a few months ago.

“Challenge Games is addressing a real need in the market,” said Eugene Yoo, Vice President at Globespan Capital Partners. “Short form, free-to-play, web-based games have the potential to pull new consumers into the category. And the engaging gameplay of their titles appeals to the active casual and hardcore gamer as well.”

The money is planed to help accelerate growth through new games, partnerships and potentially acquisitions.

Given the recent layoffs at some of Austin’s leading game companies, including Midway Studios, Challenge Games likely finds itself an ideal destination.

On Networks announces new Series with SNL Star Amy Poehler

On Networks, a creator and distributor of high quality short form video programming, announced today an original series aimed at young girls called Smart Girls at the Party. The show is created by and stars actor/writer Amy Poehler, and friends Meredith Walker, former senior producer for Nickelodeon’s Nick News, head of talent for Saturday Night Live, and Amy Miles, recording artist and performer, host of PBS children’s show LOMAX: Hound of Music.  Smart Girls celebrates young girls who are changing the world by being themselves.

The show aims to help girls find confidence in their own aspirations and talents. In each episode, Amy Poehler interviews a girl with a unique talent, community interest or point of view. The conversation ranges from the serious to the hilarious. Girls offer witty truths and show that you don’t have to be famous to be interesting or to make a difference in the world.

Given Austin’s love of both technology and movie stars, this combination makes a lot of sense.  We’re looking forward to seeing the results!
